Minimizing Costs with Staem or Energy Production

MINIMIZING COSTS WITH STEAM OR ENERGY PRODUCTION

ECCI engineers have assisted on numerous projects where wood wastes or alternative fuels are burned in boilers to produce steam or to generate electricity. ECCI’s role has ranged from the initial economic assessment to dealing with major prevention of significant deterioration (PSD) air permitting issues. Additional roles have included engineering of process modifications and burner optimizations to improve operating efficiency and to lower energy costs.

Our wide range of experience provides clients with a thorough knowledge of technologies most effective for utilizing a particular wood waste or alternative fuel. Clean Air Act (CAA) requirements can significantly impact the return on investment using alternative fuels. ECCI’s experience in dealing with complex permits allows our clients to avoid costly project delays or unnecessary control equipment.

Because ECCI engineers have industry experience, we can work effectively with facility personnel at all levels. ECCI projects are managed to fit into facility needs and production schedules. Projects are tailored to accommodate client schedules including maintenance turnarounds and capital budget planning cycles.

Example Projects:

Winrock International (Arkansas Wood Manufacturers Association) – Petit Jean Mountain, Arkansas

A feasibility study was conducted by ECCI to determine the economic viability of consolidating wood wastes from multiple Fort Smith, Arkansas area wood product manufacturers to produce steam or electricity.

Clean Air Act – PSD/New Source Review

ECCI air permit engineers have assisted with several clients in obtaining permits to allow use of wood waste or other alternative fuels to produce steam for in-plant use or electricity for on-site use and sale of the excess power. All projects listed below involved EPA’s PSD program and complex regulatory issues:

Electric Power Generation from Rice Hulls: Riceland Foods, Inc. – Stuttgart, Arkansas
Electric Power Generation from Wood Waste: Bean Lumber Company – Glenwood, Arkansas
Steam Generation from Wood Wastes: Bearden Lumber Company – Bearden, Arkansas
Steam Generating from Wood Wastes: Bibler Brothers Lumber Company – Idabel, Oklahoma

Boiler and Kiln Thermal Optimization

ECCI engineers specialize in thermal system analyses. Multiple projects have included the need to assess feed systems, combustion air burner technology, fuel quality management, or similar problem diagnosis.

Boiler Burner Optimization: Doane Pet Care, Inc. – San Bernardino, California
Kiln Burner Optimization: Alcoa, Inc. – Bauxite, Arkansas
Kiln Burner Optimization and Process Improvement: Teris, LLC - El Dorado, Arkansas
